ZAM is thrilled to welcome two highly skilled professionals to our board. Oyunga Pala is a writer, executive coach, and curator-in-chief of “The Elephant” media platform in Nairobi. Dr Marcus Desando is a Cultural Leader, Arts Executive, Opera Director, and former Director of the Prins Claus Fonds. He will take up the position of Chair of our board. They join Dineo Nhlapo and Milton van Wyk, our much-valued Treasurer and Secretary. Together, they form an inspiring and driven team of governors, ready to guide our organisation forward.
Public interest media today faces several existential threats. ZAM is acutely aware of the shrinking political spaces in which we operate. We also need to compete with the many alternative free sources of news and information available to audiences. The dominance of social media, with its irrational incentives created by algorithms, is daunting. Yet ZAM is committed to combating disinformation and providing reliable, independent reporting and stories for our audiences on the African continent and in the West.
Our newly strengthened board is ready to take these challenges head-on. “I am deeply honoured to take up the role of Chair of ZAM’s Board,” says Marcus Desando. “ZAM is an important institution with a distinctive voice, occupying a vital space in shaping conversations, ideas and perspectives between Africa and the world. I am excited to contribute to its next chapter. I look forward to working with the board and team to strengthen the organisation’s operational strategy, support its long-term sustainability, and help take ZAM confidently into the future.”
